October 2026 Market Outlook | “Turn! Turn! Turn!”
October 2026 Market Outlook
Each month, Pierre Mouton shares his perspective on global financial markets through the lens of a song that captures the prevailing market mood. Following September’s search for shelter amid increasingly narrow market leadership, October brought a striking reversal. Inspired by The Byrds’ “Turn! Turn! Turn!”, this month’s Market Outlook explores the return of market rotation, mean reversion and a broadening of equity leadership.

Few songs could better describe October’s financial markets. After months of increasingly concentrated leadership, the wheel finally turned. Yesterday’s winners became laggards, neglected assets found a new audience, and some well-established trends suddenly reversed. Above all, October was a powerful exercise in rotation and mean reversion.
Market Rotation Takes Centre Stage
The rotation was most visible within equities. The MSCI World lost 0.82% in US dollars and the S&P 500 declined 0.93%, but the equal-weighted S&P 500 surged 4.9%, revealing a very different market beneath the headline index.
The Nasdaq fell 6.65%, while MSCI World Growth lost 4.21% and Value gained 2.58%. Healthcare, one of the previous laggards, rebounded by an impressive 9.8%, without any specific sector news.
The market’s main concern now is whether the huge capex investments by hyperscalers will ultimately generate sufficient returns, with spending expected to reach about $900bn in 2026 and more than $1,200bn in 2027.
Regional Dispersion Remains High
The MSCI World lost 1.7% in September, while the S&P 500 declined 0.5%. Europe proved weaker, with the Stoxx 600 falling 2.5%, while Japan’s Topix slipped 1.2% and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index declined 0.8%.
The notable exception was the technology-heavy Nasdaq, which gained an impressive 3.2% despite the broader market weakness. Unsurprisingly, Growth outperformed Value (-0.2% versus -2.4%), illustrating once again the dominant role of a small group of growth-oriented companies in driving market returns.
Beyond Equities
Beyond equities, commodities continued their previous trend: WTI oil jumped 15.2%, while gold fell 6.6%.
Government bonds sent a more nuanced message, with 10-year yields declining by 36 bps in the US and 26 bps in Germany, while French yields moved in the opposite direction, rising 11 bps.
Credit also softened, with the iTraxx Crossover down 0.62%, while the US dollar appreciated 1.58% against the euro.
Mean Reversion Is Back
Markets have a remarkable ability to remind investors that leadership is never permanent. After an extended period dominated by momentum and concentration, October brought mean reversion back to centre stage.
Turn, turn, turn, indeed.
